Manor Party Nominates Republican Tom Lavin for Mayor, Republican Jay Hays and Democrat Randy Sellier for Trustees

Manor Party Nominates Republican Tom Lavin for Mayor, Republican Jay Hays and Democrat Randy Sellier for Trustees

Democrat Treanor Also Running for Mayor; Two Trustee Candidates Effectively Elected

A Manor Party ticket of two Republicans and one Democrat will run for election in Pelham Manor in March in a bid to end the divisiveness of recent partisan elections. Mayor Lorri Gorman, who enthusiastically supports the plan for a nonpartisan ticket, is not seeking re-election, following the tradition of mayors serving only two years.

Republican Tom Lavin, currently Deputy Mayor, is the Manor Party candidate for mayor and Republican Jay Hays and Democrat Randy Sellier are the candidates for the two open trustee positions. Mr. Hays is seeking a second term as trustee and Mr. Sellier currently is a member of the Planning Board.

All three Manor Party candidates were also nominated by their own party caucuses. Since there are no other candidates for the two trustee positions, Mr. Hays and Mr. Sellier have been effectively elected.

However, the mayor’s race will be contested. The Democrats nominated Michael Treanor for mayor, and he said the Manor Party ticket including Mr. Sellier would not have an effect on his campaign. Mr. Treanor was defeated by Mayor Gorman in the election two years ago.

In announcing the Manor Party ticket, Trustee Lavin said it was formed in reaction to recent “hotly contested elections” and to “dissent in the community on the parking issue.” He added that Pelham Manor has a tradition of professional government and he believes that candidates for the Village Board should “leave national party politics at the door.”

It was Trustee Lavin’s suggestion that the three candidates run on the Manor Party line in addition to their respective national party lines, he said, “because of their shared belief in professional village government, open to all residents regardless of their national party affiliation.”

Trustee Lavin said that if elected Mayor, he will continue Mayor Gorman’s practice of making board appointments based on personal qualifications rather than party affiliations. (Mayor Gorman appointed Mr. Sellier to the Planning Board.)

Trustee Lavin said in a statement, “I am pleased that Randy, Jay and I will be running together on The Manor Party line. Jay has done an excellent job as Trustee these past two years. He led the successful negotiations with the paid firefighters as Fire Commissioner and drafted the Home Office legislation, among other accomplishments. Randy is very well qualified to serve on the Board because of his experience on the Planning Board in reviewing the Acadia shopping center, in addition to his considerable legal skills and long standing service to the community.”

The announcement of the Manor Party ticket was made by Trustee Lavin at the Pelham Manor Republican Party caucus Tuesday night. The Pelham Manor Democratic Party caucus was held the night before, but nothing was said there about the Manor Party ticket.

In recent years, Republican candidates have received Manor Party nominations while Democratic candidates received Pelham Party nominations so voters who do not want to vote on a national party line could vote on...
